The idea must date from the artist's trip to Naples in October 1774, when he could have climbed the hill above the city to see the tomb of Virgil.
Signed and dated 'I. Wright Pinx./ 1782'.

Reputed to have belonged to Wright's friend the Rev. Thomas Gisburne; Barton Blount Estates Co by 1968.
