This conversation piece depicts a typical middle class family of the period.

Francis Brewster was a linen draper and lived in Beccles, Suffolk with his three surviving daughters and son. The setting is unostentatious and relatively plain although the tripod table and India-backed chairs are of good quality and of recent design.
