Interestingly, the furniture commissioned directly from Chippendale was in the contemporary neo-classical taste, while the Gillow commission reflects the conservative taste of country patrons. This library table is the earliest known piece by Gillow's with a complete provenance. Letters survive in the firm's comprehensive archives detailing how the patron was consulted throughout the commission. A public appeal helped to raise the money to save this work from being exported. This work was acquired with assistance from the Wolfson Foundation.
Provenance
Commissioned by Sir James Ibbetson, Denton Hall; Laura Wyvill (nee Ibbetson),; thence by descent at Constable Burton Hall, Leyburn, North Yorkshire.
