An invitation to join the celebration

The moment we've all been eagerly anticipating is just around the corner - the grand unveiling of the sculpture and the commencement of the landscaping you've generously funded. Excitement doesn't quite capture the anticipation we feel as everything comes together at last!

On Saturday 25 November, join us for a day of free activities for the launch of Hibiscus Rising. We warmly extend an invitation to our all our valued supporters who played a crucial role in making this project possible. Your support has been instrumental, and we want you to join us in celebrating this monumental occasion. We invite our guests to reflect, to practise joy and to unlock creativity through an exciting programme of activities that includes:

  • In Conversation - Yinka Shonibare with Clare Lilley, Director of Yorkshire Sculpture Park
  • Zine workshop - come and learn about zines and make your own about what Hibiscus Rising means to you.
  • Walking David Oluwale's Leeds with Joe Williams - a guided walk highlighting the key places where David Oluwale made his life
  • Poetry Workshop & Poetry Open Mic with Khadijah Ibrahiim - be guided to write your own poems, or come to either perform or hear the poets of Leeds.
  • Hibiscus Tea & Reflection - spend time at the Hibiscus Rising sculpture, take tea with us, and reflect.
  • Live Music - Yoruba Heritage Group Yorkshire and singer-songwriter Daayuur bring us live music in the surrounds of Hibiscus Rising.
  • Family Workshops - drop in to use textiles, drawing and painting in your own creations inspired by Hibiscus Rising or the Nigerian wrapper.

Activities will take place at the site of the sculpture in Aire Park and at The Tetley, nearby between 11am and 4pm.

Some events require booking, but for most activities no booking is required - just turn up on the day! Tickets can be booked at: https://leeds2023.co.uk/whats-on/hibiscus-rising-opening-a-free-activity-day - this page also contains all the information you need for the day regarding location, food vendors and more!

A huge thank you for all of your amazing support, we're excited to get final rewards out to supporters soon and we hope to see you at the Hibiscus Rising launch!

Warm regards,
