A private opening of the Athelstan 1100 Exhibition - sparkling wine and canapes will be provided
This is a private opening of the forthcoming Athelstan 1100 Exhibition preceded by a drinks reception in the Rausing Building, Malmesbury.
The Exhibition will be held in the Athelstan Museum and will be open to the public from 2nd July to 29th September 2024.
Malmesbury is celebrating the 1100th anniversary of Athelstan’s accession as king of England who is buried in the Abbey grounds.
We have assembled an important group of objects and visual displays to celebrate his association with the town.
This is a wonderful opportunity to see the Abingdon Sword on loan from the Ashmolean Museum Oxford; an important manuscript signed by Athelstan from the British Library and a rare pair of seals from the Victoria & Albert Museum. There will also be a superb collection of rare coins relating to the King, his forebears and his descendants on loan from some of London’s premier rare coin dealers.
Additionally, in the Museum, there are new information boards and new tablets offering enhanced pictorial and contextual information.
