This event is part of a series of micro residencies in The Everybody Gallery, with a range of artists working with us over the coming months. Check out this page for more information.

About the Project

Laura will be experimenting with various techniques of applying ink to paper, such as:

  • Traditional Brushwork: Inspired by Zen calligraphy, this will incorporate fluid, spontaneous strokes that convey a sense of immediacy and presence.

  • Pouring and Dripping: Techniques that allow the ink to flow and spread organically, symbolizing the natural and uncontrollable aspects of life.

  • Textured Application: Using unconventional tools to create varied textures, reflecting the diverse experiences and layers of neurodiversity.

  • Controlled Spontaneity: A combination of deliberate mark-making and spontaneous gestures, balancing the Stoic control with Zen acceptance of the present moment.

Laura’s goals and objectives include:

  • Deepening Artistic Exploration: To push the boundaries of my current artistic practice by working on a larger scale and with new techniques.

  • Integrating Philosophical Insights: To visually articulate the principles of Zen Buddhism, Stoic philosophy, and neurodiversity.

  • Creating Meditative Spaces: To produce artworks that invite viewers into a contemplative and introspective experience.

  • Expanding Audience Engagement: To reach a broader audience through the universality of the themes explored in the works.

About the Artist

Originally from Widnes, Cheshire, Laura’s journey has been a tapestry of diverse experiences and passions. Laura studied English Literature at Leeds University, where she nurtured her love for storytelling and the written word. Following her graduation, Laura moved back to the North West and embarked on a successful 20-year career in structural engineering. This period of Laura’s life was marked by precision, creativity, and the satisfaction of building tangible structures that stand the test of time.

However, the call of her creative roots remained ever-present. After two decades in engineering, Laura decided to take a leap of faith and pursue her true passion: art. This transition allowed her to blend her technical background with her artistic vision, resulting in a unique style that bridges the gap between the analytical and the imaginative.

Laura’s work often explores the intersection of structure and fluidity, mirroring her own journey from the rigidity of engineering to the freedom of artistic expression. Through her art, Laura strives to evoke emotions, tell stories, and connect with viewers on a profound level. Each piece is a testament to the harmony between precision and creativity, reflecting her diverse background and the endless possibilities that arise when we follow our true calling.
