Museum of mental health treatment through time
Destigmatising mental illness and learning difficulties, bringing attention to wellbeing and increasing understanding
Covering three hospital stores, the museum holds a remarkable collection traicing the history and development of Mental Health Care and Glenside Hospital as a psychiatric institution from its inception in 1861 to its closure in 1994. In 1915, the asylum became a temporary First World War military orthopaedic hospital. Just under 30,000 wounded soldiers were treated! One of the orderlies, the artist Stanley Spencer, was inspired by life in the hospital. Also covers the the history of the Stoke Park Hospitals for learning difficulties.
