Pages of Silk: Samples and Storage

22 February 2025
3.00 - 4.00 pm

Meet conservator, Mark Furness, who will tell us all about styles of pattern books, their storage and conservation.

People often talk about the content of books - there are plenty of book clubs out there dedicated to it. We don't often stop and think about the actual books though.

Mark Furness is a Senior Conservator at Manchester University. He is supporting the Silk Museum on the conservation of our fabulous pattern book collection.

In this talk Mark will explore the strain put on the humble book structure when it is transported, opened and closed. How are the books best preserved? What conditions are needed? He will also introduce the different styles of books, some of their features and their specific conservation challenges.
