The Julio-Claudians and Flavians (the ‘long first century’)

19 March 2025

£7.5

If you like Roman gossip or just love listening to our curator, Keith Fitzpatrick-Matthews, then this talk is for you!

Julius Caesar became sole ruler of the Roman state; in the aftermath of the Civil War following his assassination, his great-nephew Octavian established a dynastic system.

The Augustan Settlement, as it is known, lasted until the suicide of his great-great-grandson Nero in AD 68. The chaos that followed was resolved when Vespasian’s victory led to the dynasty of the Flavian emperors, ending with the assassination of Domitian in AD 98.
