Learn how the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry didn’t take no for an answer, in this evening talk from Education Curator.
Learn how the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry didn’t take no for an answer, in this evening talk from Education Curator Cas Sanders.
The First Aid Nursing Yeomanry was formed during the Boer War but did not come into its own until the First World War. The nurses travelled to France, turning rat-infested ruins into state-of-the-art hospitals and coolly going into the thick of battle to do things even Major Generals found surprising!
The Second World War gave this entirely voluntary service a chance to prove its worth. Young women who were fluent in languages went to occupied Europe, risking their lives. Today if you join, you may be called upon to help in a terrorist attack or work in secrecy. No more does a woman need her own horse, just intelligence and some courage.
