Multidisciplinary artist Alvaro Barrington addresses themes of place and belonging in the next Tate Britain Commission
Venezuelan-born artist Alvaro Barrington, raised between the Caribbean and Brooklyn, will be the next artist to create a new installation for the Tate Britain Commission. Rooted in a commitment to community, Barrington's diverse practice spans painting, exhibitions, performances, fashion, and community projects. Embracing non-traditional materials, his inclusive approach incorporates burlap, concrete, cardboard, and sewing, reflecting his personal and cultural history.
Barrington draws inspiration from a myriad of influences, including Tupac Shakur, 90s hip-hop, jazz, the Harlem Renaissance, Marcus Garvey, and modernist icons like de Kooning and Bourgeois. Resolutely interdisciplinary, he incorporates real objects into his art while expanding his network of references and communities.
