A showcase of Gavin Jantjes' artistry and activism across five decades.
This timely retrospective of Oxfordshire-based South African artist Gavin Jantjes (b. 1948, South Africa) marks his largest solo exhibition in the UK to date. Featuring over 100 pieces spanning five decades, including prints, drawings, paintings, and archival material, the showcase highlights Jantjes' evolution as a painter, printmaker, writer, curator, and activist.
Structured into chapters from 1970 onwards, To Be Free! explores Jantjes' life from Cape Town's apartheid era to his global impact on the art scene. Celebrating his journey towards artistic liberation and social change, the exhibition underscores Jantjes' role in shaping cultural narratives on Africa and its diasporas.
