Building on Cathedrals

An exhibition looking at the wonders of AI and object recognition tools within our collections.

In collaboration with Cardiff University Special Collections and Archives (SCA) and the University of Wyoming, Lambeth Palace Library is embarking on a groundbreaking digital project. This venture uses cutting-edge Artificial Intelligence (AI), such as caption detection and object recognition tools, to analyse the historical iconography of recently digitised material from the Library’s collections.

Focusing on cathedral buildings and ecclesiastical architecture in England, the project enriches the Library’s digitised collections with images of architectural iconography. This digitisation includes drawings, prints, watercolours, plans and photographic material including glass plates, negatives, and prints. The curated dataset tests, trains and evaluates SCA’ s advanced AI algorithms, and is fostering digital scholarship at the Library.

Funded by The National Endowment for the Humanities [FAIN: HND-284954-22] and the Arts and Humanities Research Council [AH/W005417/1], this research project transforms our understanding of historical architectural imagery. It also promises to enhance accessibility to the Library’s digital content for readers and researchers.

Explore our collection and witness the transformative power of caption detection, Optical Character Recognition and object recognition in Digital Collection Management. Discover how AI is reshaping the study of the visual history of architectural heritage, opening new doors to research and public engagement.

A free exhibition to showcase the achievements of the project opens on 2 September 2024 and invites you to explore the rich tapestry of cathedral architecture through a new lens, offering a glimpse into the future of humanities research and the advances we are making towards preserving and sharing our cultural heritage.
