Chawton House
With a National Art Pass you get
Jane Austen's brother's grand Elizabethan manor, Chawton House, has transformed its library into a research centre for early women's writing.
The Chawton House Library's main collection focuses on works written by women in English during the period 1600 to 1830, by writers including Mary Shelley and Maria Edgeworth. The Library holds early editions of works from the period, many of which are rare and in some cases even unique. There are portraits of notable women by Michael Dahl, John Opie, John Hoppner and Joseph Wright.
The Library also houses the Knight Collection, the private library of the Knight family, who owned Chawton House for over 400 years.
