Incorporating working machinery and interactive displays, Summerlee Museum of Scottish Industrial Life explores Coatbridge's mining and iron and steel production in the 19th century.

Nestled in Coatbridge, known affectionately as Scotland's industrial heartland, the Summerlee Museum of Scottish Industrial Life is built on the site of the old Summerlee iron works. During the 19th century, the town of Coatbridge became a major centre for mining and the production of iron and steel, a legacy that continues today and is celebrated throughout the displays, exhibitions and interactive activities available at the museum.

Now a modern, thriving visitor attraction, a day out at Summerlee can involve perusing the interactive displays, learning about local and social history, a ride on the tram or a trip down the mine.

The Summerlee Engineering Pavilion offers the opportunity for a close-up look at an impressive collection of large-scale engineering equipment, and the main exhibition hall is home to displays and working machinery, including a huge winding engine from the former Cardowan Colliery.
