The Brickworks Museum
With a National Art Pass you get
The Brickworks Museum is dedicated to championing the brick industry that has thrived in the Southampton area for hundreds of years.
Founded in 1897 by the brickmaking Ashby family, Brickworks Museum is the only surviving steam-driven brickworks in the UK. The valuable historical site is now dedicated to preserving the history of brickmaking in the area, showcasing the tools, techniques, and machinery used throughout the centuries.
What to see
The museum features a wide range of exhibits that showcase the different stages of brickmaking, from clay extraction to the firing process. You can see original machinery, and small equipment such as barrows, shovels and wagons.
Brickmakers
The museum displays photographs, documents, letters, maps and audio/visual tapes that follow the story of the industry as it developed over time, particularly through both World Wars. Learn about the working conditions of brickmakers in the old factory.
Working machinery
Once a month between May and September, the machinery is ‘steamed up’ and you can watch the process of brickmaking in action. On Steam Days the miniature railway runs too, offering train rides for younger visitors.
Did you know?…
The Brickworks Museum also houses a Penny Arcade with over 30 vintage machines. Have a go on the pre-electronics era games which run off old pennies, available from change machines or reception.
