Art Funded by you

A Devonshire Valley

Robert Polhill Bevan, 1913

© Exeter City Museums & Art Gallery

This view of an East Devon valley shows a farm near the foreground almost completely surrounded by a small wood. Beyond it, the other side of the valley, with a firmly-painted pattern of fields, is gradually lost in the distance under a delicately-painted sky. The picture is broadly painted in strong colours, including striking lilacs and pinks, and is characteristic of the work of Bevan during his membership of the Camden Town group.
