Art Funded by you

Black Country, 1919

Edward Wadsworth, 1919

© Estate of Edward Wadsworth. All rights reserved, DACS 2009

Wadsworth travelled between Liverpool and London by train during the First World War, and was inspired by the industrial landscape of the Black Country. In 1920 he exhibited a set of watercolours and drawings on this subject at the Leicester galleries. These works demonstrate the use of bold shapes and geometric patterns which endured throughout his career, despite the changes in his style. It is rare for a woodcut from this series to come on the market and Wolverhampton are delighted to add this local scene to its collection of works by Wadsworth and the Unit 1 artist's group which he joined in 1934. This work was acquired with the support of the Art Fund with the assistance of the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation.
