Cetera, a Fishing Town on the Gulf of Salerno, Italy
John Robert Cozens, 1782–1783

Cozens was, according to Constable, the 'greatest genius that ever touched landscape'. His landscapes are muted in colour and soft in lighting, being predominantly blue-green or blue-grey in tonality. Cetera is undoubtedly among the artist's most powerful compositions, possessing all the sublime grandeur of a mountain scene. Both Girtin and Turner were strongly influenced in their early stages by Cozens' work of this quality.
