Collection of 46 Saxon coins

Unknown artist, 852–899

This hoard of Saxon coins was discovered during an excavation within the area of the monastic buildings attached to St Albans Abbey. They had been scattered over a considerable area, but after they had been studied there was no doubt that they had been originally deposited during the troubled period towards the end of the 9th century as one hoard in some perishable container. The pence are all of the lunette type. The one half-penny is of the London monogram reverse type, associated with Alfred's occupation of London in 887. 4 coins stolen from the collection in 1977.
