Crane Dance

Suiko Buseki, c. 2011

The National Museum of Scotland was one of five museums to win a share of £75,000 to buy their selected object thanks to Art Fund Collect, an initiative in collaboration with the Crafts Council aimed at championing contemporary craft and increasing its presence in UK collections. This woven bamboo sculpture, comprising strips as little as one millimetre thick in two varieties of bamboo (smoked and unsmoked), was selected for the conspicuous visibility of the artistÂ’s considerable technical skill. The National Museum of Scotland has extensive holdings of Japanese art but this is the first work of bamboo to be added to the collection, and the first UK museum acquisition of this acclaimed Japanese maker.
