Design for the tomb slab of Cardinal Carlo Emanuele Pio da Carpi
Gianlorenzo Bernini, c. 1649

This is a design for a monument now in the pavement in the nave of the Church of the Gesu in Rome and was commissioned by the nephew of Cardinal Carlo Emanuele Pio da Carpi who had died in 1641. The slab itself, which was originally intended as a wall monument rather than a horizontal stone, follows the drawing very closely, only differing slightly in the inscription.
