Interior with Japanese Print

Samuel John Peploe, c. 1915

This picture is known as 'Interior with a Japanese Print' although the bowler hat on the table is a far more prominent feature in the composition, which includes a fan, a chair, and a pile of pictures. The painting is remarkable for its bold contrasts and brilliant colours. Most striking is the play of black (the bowler hat, the.black ribbon of the fan, and the woodwork of the chair) against a considerable area of creamy white. The local colours - yellows, oranges, vermilions, and greens - are very vivid, even by the standards of the Scottish school of the period.
