Library table

Gillows of Lancaster, 1778

This lavish Serpentine formed library table with leather-lined top was commissioned to enhance the elegant Denton Hall in Yorkshire, along with furniture by Thomas Chippendale. Interestingly, the furniture commissioned directly from Chippendale was in the contemporary neo-classical taste, while the Gillow commission reflects the conservative taste of country patrons. This library table is the earliest known piece by Gillow's with a complete provenance. Letters survive in the firm's comprehensive archives detailing how the patron was consulted throughout the commission. A public appeal helped to raise the money to save this work from being exported. This work was acquired with assistance from the Wolfson Foundation.
