Art Funded by you

Pair of side chairs

Unknown artist, c. 1810–1815

These chairs are of antiquarian design and would have been originally intended for Fonthill Abbey, Beckford's lavishly furnished neo-Gothic pile. They accompanied Beckford on his relocation to Bath and were then most probably placed in the Crimson Drawing Room at Lansdown Tower. Chairs of this type appear in illustrations of Lansdown Tower published in 1844.
