Storm Man & Hurricane Woman

Germaine Richier, 1947–1949

© ADAGP, Paris and DACS, London 2007

Richier's revolutionary absence of pose in L'Orage (Storm Man) and L'Ouragane (Hurricane Woman), combined with the figures' rough surfaces and disfigured appearances, speak of human suffering and survival. Although they were not originally conceived as a pair L'Ouragane was made as a response to L'Orage. They were, in Richier's view, interdependent works and they are almost always exhibited as a pair.
