The Castle by the Sea

Caspar Johann Nepomuk Scheuren, 1858

An evocation of a poem by Ludwig Uhland (1787 - 1862) which tells of a legendary castle, depicted in the centre of the painting, which reaches up towards the sky and down to the sea. It is inhabited by a king and queen and their musical daughter, whose premature death forms the focus of the poem's lament. The castle and characters are surrounded by an architectural framework, in which the seperate compartments serve to isolate episodes of the unfolding narrative.
