The Tune of the Seven Towers

Dante Gabriel Rossetti, 1857

A woman in red, with a medieval head-dress, is seated in a high oaken chair playing a musical instrument which forms part of the chair. A man in a green doublet, with long boots, sits sideways on a stool close by, watching her. A second lady stands behind, in a blue, black and gold robe and gold head-dress. In an alcove at the back a maid is seen reaching through a little window to place an orange branch upon a bed. A banner hangs down from a pole rising out of a socket beside the oaken chair. The floor is strewn with green rushes.
