Women of Belfast
F E McWilliam, 1972

McWilliam produced his 'Women of Belfast' series from 1971 as a response to the escalation of violence in the Province at that time. In his treatment of the figure he uses distortion, this time as an expression of extreme emotion. There are some twenty studies in the series; this, one of the largest, shows a woman flung back by the impact of an explosion. Both the force of the composition and the texture of the bronze indicate the agony of the subject, a symbol of all innocent victims of violence.
