Works from Crack City series
Keith Coventry, 1998–1999
The Arts Council Collection have selected a group of three still lives and three sculptures of crack pipes from the 'Crack City' series to demonstrate Coventry's working method. The 'Crack City' body of work began with a series of white abstract paintings, which relate to the 'Estate' painting series, an example of which is already in the collection. Like the 'Estate' paintings the square form in these abstracts are the footprint of a group of tower blocks in London, popularly known as 'Crack City' because of their social problems and history of drug use. Coventry's work makes no claim to any form of social commentary. The vendor has donated a group of six prints and one bronze from the series to the collection with this acquisition.
