Art Funded by you

Y Twmpa-Capel

David Jones, 1926

© Trustees of the David Jones Estate

Jones met Eric Gill in 1921 and often went to stay with Gill at Capel-y-ffin, Brecknockshire from 1924 to 1928. The distinctively shaped hill Y Twmpa dominates the view across the valley from Gill's home and it was a favourite subject of Jones during this period. In this version, the colours are heightened and unrealistic but the work reflects the artistÂ’s response to the powerful rhythms which he discerned in the local landscape.
