Yukiai (Encounters)
Naoki Takeyama, 2011

Birmingham was one of eight museums to win a share of £75,000 to buy their selected object thanks to Art Fund Collect, an initiative in collaboration with the Crafts Council aimed at championing contemporary craft and increasing its presence in UK collections. This crinkling vessel-shaped form by the Japanese artist Takeyama is made from a single sheet of hand-pinched copper, which is then folded before layers of enamel are painted on. The piece is black with yellow flecks on the exterior and a vivid turquoise interior. The Art Fund presented another work by Takeyama to Plymouth at Art Fund Collect 2011.
