Explore our new resources for museum professionals

Visitors to the British Art Show 9, 2021-22, installed at Wolverhampton Art Gallery. A Hayward Gallery Touring exhibition organised in collaboration with galleries across the cities of Aberdeen, Wolverhampton, Manchester and Plymouth supported by Art Fund

You can now access guidance and toolkits on a range of subjects including community engagement and exhibitions tax relief, with more to come.

Today we’ve launched a new area of the website to share resources designed to support museum professionals.

Drawing on insights from our work across different programmes, including our new programme Going Places, we’ve created some practical toolkits that respond to the current needs of the sector. The resources offer comprehensive support for museums of all sizes.

You can access the resources here, and we’ll be adding more in future.

Resources available now:

Museums and Galleries Exhibition Tax Relief (MGETR)

This is guidance on how museums, galleries and archives can claim the recently made-permanent Museums and Galleries Exhibition Tax Relief (MGETR).

A recorded webinar and accompanying resource document, this guidance offers clear, step-by-step information on MGETR, which allows eligible organisations to claim 40% tax relief for exhibitions and 45% for touring exhibitions. The webinar and resource have a focus on touring exhibitions.

The relief applies to a wide range of institutions, including libraries and archives. Alongside other sector partners, we worked hard to ensure this scheme was made permanent, and we hope this resource will encourage more museums to take advantage of it.

Community Engagement Toolkit

Developed in collaboration with 22 small to mid-sized museums as part of our Going Places programme, this toolkit is designed to promote and facilitate community engagement across the sector. It offers practical guidance suitable for both beginners and experienced practitioners, with resources that support a wide range of engagement activities.

The toolkit includes short films, reflection opportunities and easily actionable steps. Developed by Dr Laura Crossley, Dr Sarah Plumb and Marek Romaniszyn, and supported by The National Heritage Lottery Fund and the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, the toolkit aims to help museums build stronger, more inclusive relationships with their communities.

Environmentally Responsible Touring

This guide, created in partnership with the Design Museum (Going Places Environmental Responsibility Consultants) and the Touring Exhibition Group, aims to promote environmentally responsible decision-making in touring exhibitions. It’s a step-by-step planning tool to help museums minimise their carbon footprint, with advice on embedding sustainability into organisational practices and exhibition logistics, through to longer-term strategy.

We hope these resources will provide valuable support to museums across the UK.
