Although better known as a sculptor or painter than as a printmaker, Nicholson dedicated a great deal of time and effort into developing a particular approach to semi-abstract printmaking.

This print was made following a trip to Tuscany and shows the elaborate experimental character of NicholsonÂ’s prints with his search for the right inking and the balance of shadows. There are few prints in which NicholsonÂ’s working process and the input of the printer are so clearly visible. This print therefore provides a nearly unique insight into the artistÂ’s approach to printmaking.
