The confident use of colour and elaborately arranged composition of this work typifies GertlerÂ’s style in the mid 1920s.

The artist was an avid collector of Staffordshire figures, which he repeatedly included in his compositions – indeed, the figure depicted can also be seen in an earlier painting entitled The Hunter from 1921. This work is one of two Gertler paintings bequeathed by Maurice Farquharson through the Art Fund. It is the first work by the artist in the Scottish national collection. Extract of an article in the 2007 Art Fund Review written by Kirstie Meehan.
