Desmet is one of Britain's foremost contemporary wood engravers. In her work she explores themes of architecture and metamorphosis to create a sense of the interweaving of years of history, specifically the multi-layered nature of cities, where ancient ruins co-exist with modern apartments, and where building sites clad in scaffolding imply change and development. These exoskeletons help to describe and disguise the structures beneath, and imply a process of mutation. Desmet often uses a sequential format to imply time, change and chains of thought.
