Based on the artist's war experiences with the Royal Army Medical Corps in Salonika (1916-17), the painting shows the entrance to a dressing station with a group of stretcher-bearers waiting with the wounded and malaria-stricken. These sketches which all relate to the painting, will contribute much to the understanding of the painting itself and of Lamb's working practices. With wide public interest in warfare both past and present, the sketches will provide new opportunities for educational work at Manchester based on the impact and human cost of conflict, as well as its visual representation.
