This painting by French academic artist Hébert depicts a family of Italian peasants escaping a malaria epidemic by raft, a scene inspired by events Hébert had witnessed while in Italy.

It is a reduced-scale copy by the artist of his award-winning Salon entry of 1850 (now in the Musée d'Orsay, Paris).
