Earth is one of a group of four sculptures commissioned from Yinka Shonibare MBE by the Israel Museum, Jerusalem, in 2010.
The group is based on the four elements of air, fire, water and earth, believed by the Ancient Greeks to be essential to life. The piece incorporates many of the elements that characterise Shonibare’s work, such as the use of a mannequin, Africanstyle fabrics and a Surrealist globe in place of a head.
