Marcelle Hanselaar was born in Rotterdam in 1945, and trained in drawing at the Royal Academy of Arts in The Hague.
A selftaught painter, she settled in London, in the early 1980s, where she undertook a short course in printmaking at Kensington & Chelsea College. She is now regarded as one of the foremost printmakers in Britain, with work featuring in major international collections.
This acquisition comprises two suites of prints, plus two individual prints. The larger of the two suites is The Crying Game, a set of 30 etchings inspired by Otto Dix’s 1924 series The War. The highly expressive, figurative compositions reflect Hanselaar’s feelings about the damage that is caused by contemporary conflicts.
We’re all Bleeding is a suite of nine figurative etchings exploring issues of identity and gender. Intense scenes occupy the centre of the compositions, with onlookers shown observing the action. Handcolouring has been used to further heighten the sense of drama.
Aberystwyth University School of Art Museum and Galleries currently holds three works by Hanselaar, including two lithographs made by the artist in the School of Art’s printmaking department. These 41 prints now join them in the university’s collection.
