This relatively early view of Hove shows the coastal village before the massive building developments of the second half of the 19th century covered the landscape with closely-packed squares, parades and terraces.

Nothing but Hove Church now remains. George Hilditch and his brother Richard were both landscape painters of ability, George's works showing the greater facility, with an awareness of the contemporary preoccupation with spontaneity in response to landscape.
