The design of the group draws heavily upon elements found in the work of Michelangelo and Giambologna.
It is now thought possible that Foggini carved his group from the colossal marble block reserved by Giambologna which was present in the workshop on Giambologna's death in 1608 and was available to Foggini when he took over the same workshop a century later.
