This work depicts boats endeavouring to avoid the rocky and barren coast but the lowering clouds and rough sea show how perilous is their passage.

Henry Bright was a member of the Norwich School of painting. He took lessons from John Berney Crome and John Sell Cotman, the strong influence of the latter artist being reflected in Bright's work. One of six gifts to six museums by Howard Bliss through the Art Fund between 1946 and 1957.
