Generally considered to be a study for the painting, 'Diogenes discarding his bowl' of 1653, a pendant to 'Democritus' of 1651, both of which are now in Copenhagen.
The study is presumably an early idea for the composition as the poses and placing of the figures in the drawing and painting differ.
