A double portrait of William Hallett (1764-1842) and his wife Elizabeth, neé Stephen (1763/4- 1833), painted around the time of their marriage in 1785.
The subjects are shown finely dressed, strolling in a landscape with their dog.
Provenance
After Mrs Hallett's death, offered for sale at Foster's in 1834, but not sold; later a dispute arose about ownership; sold from the Hilliard collection in April 1884 to Agnew's; sold 8 days later to Sir N M Rothschild (Lord Rothschild).
