This painting complemented two other works by Lord Methuen in the Greenwich Museum collection, a view of the Thames at Greenwich and a view of the Thames at Deptford.
Lord Methuen was a landscape, architectural and figure painter who worked in oils. He was a member of various societies and was elected to the Royal Academy in 1959. Part of a bequest to two museums by Lady Bonham Carter through the Art Fund in 1992.
