He specialised in still life and hunting scenes. Other versions of this particular composition are in the Alte Pinakotek, Munich, and in Geneva. This is a major work which has been at Temple Newsam since the 1760s. In 1854, Dr. Waagen characterised it as 'a spirited chef-d'oeuvre of this excellent master'. It hung on one of the long south walls and is documented there in old photographs.
