The Honiton technique for lace making is bobbin lace made on a pillow; the flower and animal motifs were made separately and then, with very fine, undecorated smooth bobbins, incorporated to the net ground. These pieces are representative of the Napoleonic period of the early nineteenth century when distinctive designs came into fashion. The stole is of further interest as it is by far the largest piece of pillow made net that the Gallery has ever seen or even heard of.
