The work is set in a house in Goldsmid Place (now Harbour Parade), Ramsgate.
The seated figure is the artist's mistress and model, Mrs Kathleen Newton, whom he met about this time. Tissot's interest in Japanese prints would have made him aware of the graphic potential of folds and patterns of clothes.
