This drawing, which is one of Gainsborough's most lyrical, has always been considered an exceptional example of his graphic work.

It is from his series of studies made from the works of the more learned painters of landscape, in particular from Gaspard Poussin. His studies were not direct copies but rather exercises in the manner of the older artist.
